A New Class for 2012

Last week 26 students started in 2S with Mrs B and Mrs E. We've had lots of fun organising our books and pencils, learning to sit at our desks and to listen to our teachers and each other. 2S created their own set of Class Rules so that our classroom will be a safe and happy learning place in 2012. This week we have started Maths Groups, Word Study, History, Religion, Literacy Groups and today we are learning about Blogging!

What can we mix with water to make a new substance?

This was the Science question that 2V investigated this week. We conducted experiments to see what we could mix with water to make a new substance. Mrs B mixed sand, flour, sugar and salt with water and we noticed some different changes. Sand and flour did not dissolve in the water and are insoluble substances. Salt and sugar do dissolve in water and are called soluble substances. These two substances make a new solution - sugary water and salty water! We even got to taste our new solutions!

Too Many Pears

2V have been learning about the structure and language features of a Narrative. A Narrative has a beginning, a problem, 2 or 3 events, a resolution for the problem and an ending. Yesterday we read Too Many Pears where Pamela the cow has a problem with eating pears. Amy comes up with a great plan to fix Pamela's problem. Do you know what she did?

Making Jelly

Did you know that some materials can be changed into something that has different properties? This week in 2V we conducted a Science experiment to find out what happens when you add boiling water to jelly crystals. The photo will give you the answer - we made yummy jelly!

2V performed "The Light of the World" Liturgy yesterday in the Church for friends and families. As a class we were celebrating the Light of Jesus in our world through prayer and song.

Making Materials Change

Welcome back everyone to Term 4 here at SJV. We've had such a busy week with Swimming lessons on Wednesday, practice for our class Liturgy and lots of class work. On Tuesday we started our Term 4 Science Unit - How do Materials Change? We learnt that materials are what things are made of and can be either natural (rock, wood) or processed (made by people). 2V then spent some time changing materials by cutting, folding, rolling, stretching and shaping. On Monday all of Year 2 performed a skipping routine for the SJV Jump Off. The Jump Off was part of the Jump Rope for Heart program where we also raised money to help the Heart Foundation.

Raw Art

This week in 2V we had a teacher from Raw Art who taught us about Abstract Art. Abstract Art is a painting using line, shape and colour. Leonna showed us step by step how to make an Amazing Abstract Art using black texta and watercolours. We even splattered paint over our work at the end and the result was some very amazing abstract art!

Book Week

This week at SJV we have had lots of different events at our school. On Wednesday we had a Book Week parade where we got to dress up as our favourite book character. Gabriel was dressed as 'The Stroogle' and won the Year 2 prize.

After the Book Week parade we had the SJV Talent Show. Claudia and Cooper from 2V performed a mime where two friends had a food fight.

Today we had a special performance from Sam the Magician. He did the most amazing magic that we have ever seen here at SJV. He even made Pip the dove disappear!

Mermaids

This week in our Fantasy Fun Unit 2V have been learning about Mermaids. Did you know that Mermaids are imaginary sea creatures that have a tail like a fish and the body of a woman. We played a game on the computer where we cleaned up the ocean for a mermaid, we put on a tail like a mermaid and jumped around in a jumping sack, we painted a picture of a mermaid and we did a science experiment where we watched mermaids (raisins) float to the surface and sink to the bottom of an ocean. WOW!!!!

Maths, Snakes and Monsters

What a busy week in 2V it has been. We have been hard at work in Maths Groups learning to add two digit numbers. Here's an addition problem to solve - 76 + 22 = ?

In our Poetry Unit this week Mrs B read us a poem about a Taipan in a Frypan and we had to illustrate the poem using the information we had heard in the poem. What great illustrators we have in 2V!

We have been busy talking about monsters all week! We have written a poem about a monster, coloured in a monster for display in the classroom and made a monster out of playdough.

Fantasy Fun

Welcome back everyone to Term 3. This term in our Unit work we are learning about Creatures of Fantasy like monsters, giants, witches, dragons and mermaids. Yesterday we talked about what we already know and what we would like to know more about. Did you know that dragons can breath fire, mermaids can swim under water, witches can be pretty, giants are very tall and monsters can look weird.

Big Feet and Orange Day

It has been so busy in 2V this week. We have been busy working on a maths investigation about how big Year 2 feet are. We used blocks to measure the area of a tracing of our right foot and then we collected the data into a graph to discover some amazing things. Matthew had the biggest foot, Cooper had the smallest foot and the difference between them was 20 blocks. Most children had a foot area of 28 blocks and Mrs B's foot measured 41 blocks.

Yesterday 2V presented their written persuasions on Moreton Bay to their Year 4 buddies. They did a wonderful job persuading their buddies to do the right thing and look after Moreton Bay.

Wednesday was Orange Day where we wore orange clothes to school and made a gold coin donation to help save the endangered orangutans.

News Time and Bee Bots

On Wednesday 2V had some great items for News Time. Mathew had a wonderful helicopter that he had made and Ruby bought in a bear that she found on her recent holiday to Los Angeles.

Today in Maths groups we practised our directions - left, right, forward and backwards - using Bee Bots. These are small, robot bees who can be programmed to move in any direction. We even set up a course for the Bots to move along.

Time and Persuasion

This week in 2V we have spent all week in maths learning about telling the time - o'clock, half past,quarter to and quarter past. We used clocks and played games to help us to remember how to tell the time in these different ways.

Yesterday 2V had to persuade Mrs B to give the class more free time. Everyone wrote a very good persuasion with great openings, strong arguments and fabulous conclusions about why they should have more free time. Mrs B wrote her own persuasion about why 2V already have too much free time. After listening to eveyone's persuasion it was decided that 2V would have free time on Friday - 2V were very persuasive!

St Helena Island - Digging up the Past!

2V visited St Helena Island yesterday to dig up the past and to help the Professor and the Doctor to save the island from being made into a holiday resort! We found some amazing old objects including a cannon ball, bottle, axe head and a turtle shell. We surveyed the island and visited the Lime Kiln, the Children's Cemetery, the Prisoner's Cemetery and the old Well. The boat trip over and back was smooth and we learnt even more about Moreton Bay from Mr T.

Fractions, Sorry Day and Graffitti

It has been a very busy week in 2V. We have been learning about Fractions in Maths including halves, quarters and eighths. We made Fairy Bread which we then cut into two equal parts and then into four equal parts or quarters. Of course the best part was eating our bread!

On Thursday it was National Sorry Day and 2V presented their Prayer Assembly to the whole school. We prayed to God to help us to be kind to all people and we sang a song about being one nation.

Today we used a big piece of paper as a graffitti wall to publish all of our learnings from our Moreton Bay Unit. We could use words or drawings to present what we had learnt. We are now getting ready to write a Persuasion about why we should protect Moreton Bay.

Fair Share and Moreton Bay

This week in 2V we have been busy learning about Fair Share in Maths. Did you know that this is how we start to learn about how to use division in number sentences. We shared pop sticks, plastic animals, counters and blocks to help us learn how to divide.

We have also learnt more about the Moreton Bay environment by looking at books that have stories and photographs about the history of the area. Yesterday we spent some time on the Library deck looking out over the Bay and writing down what we could see. We then watched a great video clip about Moreton Bay and discovered some amazing facts. Did you know that Moreton Bay is 3400 kilometres wide and has lots of people who visit the area from overseas.

On Wednesday 2V went exploring Moreton Bay with 2S and 2J. Mr Mac also came along to help us learn some fantastic facts about the Bay and some of the creatures that live there. It was muddy and so much fun!

Mothers Day

2V have been busy making a special present for Mum's this week to help celebrate Mothers Day on Sunday. We hope that Mum's like what we have done and get great use out of the present.

Today we did some dot paintings of dolphins and turtles as part of our Unit work about Moreton Bay. We have been learning about the Quandamooka People of Moreton Bay and how they lived in the area and used the Bay as a source of food.

We also started our Religion Unit on the Power of Prayer where we had a look at our Sacred Space and the objects we use in that environment. Today we competed with the whole school in the Cross Country. It was muddy, hilly but lots of fun.

This is our last week at school before the Easter break and we have been busy finishing off Term 1 class work. On Tuesday we performed our Uptown Girl dance that we had learnt in Dance Cart for the whole school, our family and friends. We were fabulous!

Today is the last day of school before the holidays and Mrs T's Year 4 class came to help us make Easter baskets. We are hoping that the Easter bunny remembers to visit us sometime today to leave a surprise in our basket.

Fish and Chip Friday

The Year 2 excursion to the park was a way to celebrate our 'You, Me, Us' Unit and to sit with our family and friends and have a lunch of fish and chips. At the same time we made a donation to Project Compassion and thought about all the people in the world who could not be doing what we were doing. It rained a little on the day but we still had a great play on the Spider Web playground and did lots of skipping. The Zooperdoopers were fantastic!

Sports Day and Graphs

On Friday we had our school Sports Day. We participated in fun activities like Poison Ball and Chase the Tail with everyone from Year 2. We also had running races where we had to run as fast as we could over either 60 metres or 80 metres. There was lots of cheering from the four school teams and the Red team won the day.

This week in Maths we have been learning how to collect data and display data using a graph. Yesterday we collected data about different coloured counters and today we used Fruit Loops. We have used both a Bar Graph and a Column Graph to display our data.

Values and Seasons

This week in Maths we have been busy learning about months and seasons. We have played lots of different games and activities to help us remember the months of the year and what months match to seasons. We have played YES and NO Month Quizz and Month and Seasons Memory. Do you know what season we are in right now?

In our Writing with Mrs Juler session today in the Library we continued to plan our story about our favourite day out with our family. We can't wait to start writing our Personal Narrative next week.

Today in our Unit Work we talked about Team Values. A value is something that is important and useful and includes things like kindness, excellence, forgiveness and trust. As a class we decided that it is important for our class team to have the values of kindness, honesty, courage, respect, trust, friendliness, love and care.

Number stories and St Patrick's Day

This week in Maths groups we worked on number stories. We read stories and then had to write addition or subtraction number sentences to match. Here's one for you to try - I found 8 shells on the beach on Monday. On Tuesday I found 5 more shells. How many shells did I find altogether?

Today we celebrated St Patrick's Day. Did you know that when Patrick was 16 he was captured by pirates and taken to Ireland. He looked after sheep in the mountains and he was a brave man. He showed love by helping people to learn about Jesus.

An orange world and a new place

This week we could start to use the new space outside our classroom. It has wonderful artificial grass and garden seating and also connects to our new Hall building. Munch and crunch time is now spent in this area.

Today we talked about why it is important for people to be different. We listened to Alana's story where her favourite colour was orange and then she dreamt that the whole world was orange! It wasn't very nice at all. 2V then had to draw a picture using only one colour and we talked about how they felt about their picture. Boring, all the same, not interesting and plain were some of the responses from the class. We decided that it is great for people to be different!

Mathletics and Fruit Loops

This week 2V have started using Mathletics as part of Maths Groups. We have been working on activities about Number, playing our games and competing against other students around the world in Live Mathletics.

Today in our Unit work - You, Me, Us - we had fun with our friends. We played a game called Sticky Popcorn and then we had to wear a blindfold and feed each other fruit loops! We each had 10 fruit loops to give to our partner without dropping any off the spoon.

Being Friendly

Today we talked about being friendly. Mrs B put our 'friendly' words into a word cloud - isn't it fantastic! We also made a Friendship Tree by decorating leaves and placing them on a tree trunk. We had to write "I am a good friend." on the leaf to remind us that we are all good friends here in 2V.

Skittles and Circle Time

This week 2V have been busy learning in maths about subtraction or take-away. We played a cool game called Take Away Skittles - look at the photo and see if you can work out how it was played. In our Unit work - 'You, Me, Us' we talked in our class circle about helping and caring. We made a Helping Hand and we did a Y Chart on what caring looked like, sounded like and felt like. Today we tried leaving a comment on our Blog about last weeks Post from Mrs B. Everyone did really well for their first time. Congratulations 2V!

Super Sentences and Stars

This week in 2V we counted in 100's all the way up to 1000 and played a game called Memory where we had to match the number word and number. We also visited Mrs J in the Library where she taught us how to build a Super Sentence. Our Super Sentences were about a cat! In our You, Me, Us Unit we worked together as a team to decorate a star. We each had to take turns and share the work of making our star look beautiful. Mrs B has put them on the wall near our classroom door. Today 2V spent some time on computers exploring this Blog to see it's different parts, read posts and follow links to interesting sites. Next week we will be ready to leave a comment.

A Big Week in 2V

This week was very exciting for 2V as we welcomed Mrs Mc to our classroom on Monday and Tuesday. In Maths we have been counting in 2's, 5's and 10's. You can practice this counting at home by playing POP with your family!

SJV went to church today for a mass to start off our school year. Lots of great singing and praying. Thank you to all the Mum's, Dad's and Grandparent's who came to join in our mass.

In our Unit Work - YOU ME US - we had the chance to learn more about each other by sharing some things that we liked to do and places we liked to go to. We also read a great book about how we are all alike and different at the same time.

Our First Week

Welcome everyone to 2V. Wow! What a great start to the new school year. We have worked very hard for the first two weeks of school and have learnt lots of new things and had lots of fun. We are using Study Ladder in our Maths Groups and we have been learning to talk about the books we read in Reading Groups. 2V have started Dance Cart, PE, Music and Drama this week. It has been very hot but we have still worked very hard.

Moreton Bay Adventure

Yesterday 2BP went on a Moreton Bay Adventure to the waterfront. We started by visiting the National Parks Office and listened to Darren who is a Park Ranger for Moreton Bay Marine Park. Darren told us about how special the Bay is and we saw some great pictures taken by photographers underwater.

Next we explored the waters of Moreton Bay with Mr Mac who told us what lived in the waters of the Bay. He had caught some creatures which we had a close look at using science beakers. We even caught fish on a fishing line and saw a huge mud crab!

Our last place to visit was the Coast Guard and Mr F took us through the building and showed us all the cool vessels that are used to rescue people and boats in trouble on the Bay. He had some great stories to share with us and told us how important the Coast Guard is in keeping everyone safe on the water.

Cubes, Prisms and Swimming

In maths this week we had to try and draw a 3D cube and prism on to a flat whiteboard. We had to carefully follow instructions step by step to draw our shapes. It was really hard but lots of fun!

On Thursday 2BP started swim lessons at a nearby pool. The day was rainy, cloudy and grey but the water was warm. After our lesson we had a little free time and got to go on the waterslide.

Fun with Maths and Monster Project

We have had so much fun in 2BP this week. First of all we went to a Fun with Maths workshop in the library where we played with lots of different maths equipment and games to find solutions to problems.

This week we finished building our monster parts and today we worked with 2R and 2M to put the monster all together. Our monster now lives in the library and we invite you to come and meet him. We are now deciding on a name for our monster and Mrs M has sent his photo into the Monster Project.

Prayer Flags and History

This week in 2BP we learnt about Prayer Flags and we all made one of our own. The class joined their Prayer Flags together and they now hang in our classroom.

In our Unit we investigated the history of the Moreton Bay area. We looked at photographs taken in the past of the Wynnum and Manly area and had to write what we could see. We shared our findings with the class and decided that it would have been fun in the past riding horses on Manly beach and living in a tent on the esplanade!

Our Monster making is going well. Our monster parts are looking great and we are getting ready to join our parts with the parts being made in 2R and 2W.

Moreton Bay and Monsters

This week in 2BP as part of our Unit work on Moreton Bay we made dolphin and turtle pictures to decorate our classroom. We also learnt how the Quandamooka People hunted for marine animals in Moreton Bay using canoes, fishing hooks and nets.

Today we started the first step in building parts for the Year 2 monster which is part of the global 2010 Monster Project. We have had much fun planning and designing our monster part with our partner and today we got to look at the materials we had collected and start to think about how to build the part. It was lots of fun!

The Metre, the Bay and a Birthday

Welcome back everybody to Term 4! 2BP started work straight away as we have a very busy and action packed 9 weeks of learning.

This term we are learning about Moreton Bay: Then and Now and will be looking at how this marine environment has changed over time. This week we began by reading some information about the Quandamooka People who were the Indigenous people who first lived in the Bay area. Did you know that Dugong was a favourite of the Quandamooka People? They ate the meat roasted and used the oil from the fat to rub on their skin.

In Maths we learnt how to measure a metre using wooden rulers and rolled newspaper as long as a metre. Can you believe that our classroom is more than 9 metres and our bookshelf is less than 1 metre!

Today we celebrated Mrs B's birthday which will be on Sunday the 10th of the 10th 2010! She shared some very yummy cakes with us and we sang 'Happy Birthday' very loudly. Thanks Mrs W and Ella for baking and bringing the cakes to school.

A Bible Story and a Red Car

It was News Time this week for Group 3 and Fox showed us his remote control car. It was big, red and went very fast. 2BP took it out for a spin on the blue area - WOW!

In Religion on Wednesday we talked more about the Bible story - The Feeding of the Five Thousand. We made a sea in our classroom and performed a role play showing how Jesus and his disciples spoke to the crowd and how a little boy shared his food with everyone.

Graphing and Count Us In

On Wednesday our school participated in the national Count Us In celebration. At 10.45am schools across Australia sang a song called Come Play Your Part. 2BP sang very loud and did some great actions to go with the song.

Today we looked at Graphs in Maths where we collected data about our birthdays. January is the most popular birthday month in our class with August and December having no sutdents celebrating a birthday. We also made a huge graph on how we travelled to school that day. Car travel was the winner by far!

Book Week and the Egg Drop

This week 2BP set a record for dropping an egg from 340 cm before it broke. Our egg was well covered with a shield made of bubble wrap, tissue paper and cardboard. It was so much fun seeing which groups egg survived the drop the best.

On Thursday we had our school Book Week Parade. 2BP had some great book character costumes like Ned Kelly, Wally, Hannah Montanah and Spider Man. Fox who was dressed as Ned Kelly won a prize for the best dressed in Year 2.

Egg Drop and Sheep

This week in 2BP we have been busy investigating how high we can drop an egg before it breaks. When we dropped an egg on a hard surface it broke at 7cm and on a soft surface at 38cm. On Wednesday we decided to conduct an experiment and to keep it a fair test we could only change one variable. We would make the outside of the egg stronger by making a shield out of materials like bubble wrap, tissue paper, cotton wool and sticky tape. Next week we will put our shields to the test to see how well they work.

Did you know that the word 'sheep' appears in the Bible 750 times? 2BP learnt that fact this week when we talked about the importance of sheep in Bible times and read a story about the lost sheep.

2BP go to the EKKA

There is only one thing we could write about this week from 2BP and that is our trip to the Ekka! We left early in the morning to catch the train to the Ekka grounds and started our day with a snack in the Enchanted Forest. After that we visited different pavilions including the cattle, Agricultural Market, Dairy Industry and the Animal Walk. We milked a cow, collected lots of free things to take home, ate fairy floss and saw baby animals. The best part of the day was the visit to the Showbag Pavilion where we got to buy a showbag with our own money. The train trip home gave us the chance to sit and look through our bags. It was a fantastic excursion.

Sport, Chickens and Capacity

What a busy week we have had in 2BP. This was the last week for the Henny Penny Chickens in 2R's classroom. We visited the chicks everyday and kept a journal of our observations. We couldn't believe how much the chicks grew in the few short days after they hatched and we are sad to see them leave the school.

Our school sport carnival was held on Wednesday and our three teams had a great day running, jumping and throwing. The weather was sunny most of the day with a little bit of rain.

Today in maths we played with water and rice to measure the capacity of different containers. We discovered that the bucket we used held the most water while the cup held the least amount. We had rice and water everywhere by the end of Maths Groups but we had lots of fun measuring!

Chickens and Music

This week in 2BP we saw 14 chickens hatched from eggs in the Henny Penny hatching area in 2R's classroom. It was so exciting seeing the little, wet chicks arrive in the world. There are now two black chicks and 12 yellow chicks in the pen and they are all so cute. The chicks are with us until next week and we will continue to observe them everyday to see changes. On Thursday we had a visit from the Nexus Art Performers and they were fabulous! They took us on a journey of world music using the song 'Humpty Dumpty'. Lots of students had to dress up and help with the different types of music. It was so cool.

2BP all arrived safely back at school this week for the start of Term 3. It was so good to have everyone ready to get down to work and what a busy term it will be. 2BP are learning about the 'Farm to Table' in our Unit work and we are getting to know the Bible in our study of Religion.

This week in our Maths Groups we practised counting in tens. To help with this we built block towers using ten blocks in each tower. Students had to count in tens to make sure that they had 10 groups of ten blocks to make their final big tower of 100 blocks. To really see how long we could make our tower we joined everyone's block towers together and stretched them over the blue area outside our classroom. We used 2000 blocks to make what we think is the world record for a block tower!

Recount and Liturgy

This week 2BP have been busy working on publishing their recounts of The Great Outdoors Campout. We have been using a word document to publish our work and have chosen font styles and inserted photographs from the campout to make our work look extra special. The class have learnt how to write a recount and how to use a word document this term and it has been great using all we know to publish our story from The Great Outdoors Campout.

This afternoon 2BP held a class liturgy in our classroom. Lots of mums, dads and family friends came along to hear what we had to say about being spiritual. This term we have been learning about our spiritual selves and todays liturgy was a chance to share what we know with family and friends.

Bikes and Word Wall Words

In News Time this week Emily showed us her new bike. It was a lovely pink colour with gears and a very special seat. Emily told us all about how she is learning to ride her new bike and gave us a little demonstration on how well she does ride already.

In Reading Groups this week we listened to 'Wombat Stew' on the Listening Post. 2BP then got to practice the Word Wall Words for this week in a different way. They used playdough to make the words. Have a look at the photos and see if you can read the word they were trying to spell.

The Great Outdoors Campout

There is only one thing that 2BP can blog about this week and it would be our excursion to Bayside Park for the Great Outdoors Campout. We had five parent helpers who walked down with our class to the park where we had to put up our tents and collect our Great Outdoors Passport. For every activity we participated in we got a stamp in our Passport. Activities included nature craft, mapping, shapes in nature, reading camping books in a tent, seashore exploring, fishing and camp games like bocce, frisbee and snakes and ladders. Our lunch was a sausage sizzle and because we were camping we even got to toast marshmallows at the end of the day. 2BP had a fabulous excursion in the Great Outdoors!

Under 8's Day and Hexagons

Wednesday was a very big day for 2BP. The morning session was spent moving around and participating in different activities which was all a part of Under 8's day celebrations here at our school. 2BP made balancing birds, planted sunflower seeds, sat in a police car and visited animals from the RSPCA. Everyone took home a big bag full of things that they had collected during the morning. It was so much fun!

This week in Maths we explored hexagons and discovered that they are a very interesting 2D shape. They only need to have six sides and come in lots of different shapes. We had fun as a class making hexagons using geoboards and rubber bands.

Reading People and Dice Rolls

We have had another very busy week here in the 2BP classroom. This week in Religion we found out about some different groups that help others. We took a look at websites for World Vision, Australian Red Cross and Caritas. After reading information and watching video clips the class talked about what these groups did to help others around the world and here in Australia and perhaps how we can help when people are in trouble. From this activity the class then looked at photographs of people and in small groups talked about the feelings and spirit shown in the images. We then had a go at 'reading' each other from just the expression on our face and how we held our body.

In Maths this week we learnt a lot of different things but the most fun we had as a class was when we investigated dice rolls. We each had 10 minutes to roll a dice and keep tally marks of how many of each number we rolled. From there we sorted the data (made sense of the information we had collected) and placed the numbers onto a class table. The winner was 6 with 294 rolls. The least number of rolls with a score of 205 was 3. We then added up all the data and discovered that the class had rolled the dice 1504 times! Wow!

Nature and Length

On Wednesday 2BP looked at some pictures from nature and talked about how places like beaches, forests and mountains can help us feel connected to God. We had to select a picture of either a beach, sunset or forest and write in ten words or less how that picture made us feel. Here are two sentences....

I like the beach because it makes me feel calm.

The forest helps me to be close to God.

This week in Maths Groups we investigated length. 2BP used a chain of 20 paperclips to measure parts of their body like a hand, wrist to elbow and knee to ankle. We also had a chance to measure things like a book, desk and skipping rope using blocks or paddle pop sticks. This was so much fun counting and sharing our measurements.

Milly, Mothers Day and Quarters

This week in 2BP we had lots of interesting things happening in our classroom. First, Milly the dog visited with Hannah for News Time. She was very well behaved except when she tried to chew Mrs B's leg!

In Maths we learnt about finding Quarters. Did you know that 2 quarters is the same as 1 half? We had to make fairy bread and cut our piece of bread into quarters. There is more than one way to do this - WOW! The best part was eating our quarters.

Mothers Day is this Sunday and 2BP have been busy making Mothers Day presents and cards. Have a look at the beautiful fridge magnets we made in class. Thanks to all those parents who came to help with the painting and decorating.

Living, Non-Living, Natural and Man-Made

This week 2BP spent time investigating our environment here at school. The environment is the world around us and can include the air, water, plants, animals and land. We have learnt that some of the things in our environment have been made by people and some things are natural. We also discovered that these things can be either living or non-living as well. We had some time to go out and explore the school environment and see what we could find that was natural, man-made, living and non-living. Old Tom and 3D Shapes

2BP started the week looking again at 3D shapes. We learnt what a face and corner were on these shapes and we had to make a cube, cylinder and cone out of playdough. Very tricky!

This week we also had a visit from Leigh Hobbs. Leigh is the author and illustrater of The Old Tom, Horrible Harriet and Mr Chicken books. He taught us how to draw Old Tom and Mr Chicken line by line. It was so much fun and everybody had their very own picture of Old Tom and Mr Chicken.

Alistair our class bear had an adventure of his own this week. He went down to the oval for a play! We had to write the events as they happened in order - first he played in the sandpit, next he had a slide, then he kicked a ball and last he had a drink. This was good practise for writing a Recount which we are learning about this term.

The Great Outdoors

Welcome back to school and Term 2 of the school year. This term 2BP are learning about The Great Outdoors. We will be looking at some of the different environments we could go camping at like the beach, mountains, desert and bush. We will also be sharing stories about camping outdoors and what it is like during the different seasons outside.

This week in Maths Groups we learnt about ordinal numbers. Have a look at the photo where we had to put jigsaw pieces together from 1st to 20th place.

Fish and Chip Friday

Last Friday 2BP walked down to the local park to have a Fish and Chip lunch with their friends and family. As part of the day we collected a gold coin donation for Project Compassion. We also remembered all those children in the world who are not as lucky as us and cannot go and have fish and chips for lunch at any time. We had a great play in the park with our friends but the walk up the hill back to school was not very good at all!

This week we had our last News Time session for Term 1. Fox had for his News Time the biggest bag of marbles we have ever seen. There were thousands of marbles! The marbles belonged to his Great Grandfather and to have that many marbles he must have been a fantastic player to win so many.

Today is our last day of Term 1 and we are just about ready to go on our Easter holidays. Our fingers are crossed that the Easter bunny finds our classroom before the end of the day to deliver some eggs in our Easter bags that we made this morning. 2BP wishes everybody a safe and holy Easter.

Family Graph and Ditto

Boy were we busy in 2BP this week!In Maths we looked at what a graph can do. Did you know that a graph can present information or data in a way that is easy to understand? 2BP collected data about how many people were in their family. Students had to draw a picture of all family members and we glued these pieces of paper onto a huge picture graph. At the end we could easily see that four people in a family was the winner. Our graph looks so cool don't you think?

This week we also had a visit from Ditto. Ditto comes from Bravehearts and he helped us to think about all the things we need to do to keep safe. Did you know that we all have the right to feel safe with people and when we have "no" feelings our body can give us warning signs. Goose bumps, butterflies in the tummy, fast heart and wobbly knees can tell us that we are having a "no" feeling. "Yes" feelings on the other hand tell us that we feel safe. We need to remember that it's ok to say "No" if you feel unsafe or unsure.

Fairy Bread and Caritas

This week in 2BP we talked a lot in Maths about half. We investigated how many equal parts you needed to divide something into to have a half. We found pictures in magazines and made posters showing different objects cut in half and we even made Fairy Bread. We had to cut our bread in half (there are different ways to do this) and of course we got to eat it!

Today we have just finished walking around the school oval three times for Caritas K's. This is to help us understand that in some countries, like Cambodia, people need to walk a long way to get their water for the day. Our class carried teddy bears on their backs and we were very thirsty when we finished our walk. We are very lucky here in Australia that we only have to walk to a tap to get our water.

Skittles and Good Choices

This week in 2BP we did lots of work in Maths on subtraction and difference. We played a game called Take Away Skittles where we had to knock down as many skittles as we could and write a matching subtraction number sentence on the whiteboard. No one got a strike out where they knocked all ten of the skittles over (10 - 10 = 0) but we did have lots of fun.

We talked a lot this week about what being part of a team means to us. We decided as a class that T E A M stands for Together Everyone Achieves More! Our class also learnt about a Good Choices Plan to help us decide the right choice to make when we are faced with a problem. We played a great game about a family camping holiday where good choices, like helping to look after your little sister, rewarded you with moving extra spaces on the game.

World Maths Day, Keyboards and being Fair

This week in 2BP we have been very busy. In Word Study we used laminated computer keyboards to help us to practice our Word Wall Words. This was fun but a little tricky finding the correct letters!

Wednesday was World Maths Day and everybody played Live Mathletics with children from all over the world. We tested our maths skills and knowledge with students from China, the USA, Spain and other schools in Australia. 2BP had a great time winning as many points as they could for our school.

In Unit Work this week we talked about what being fair is like. We worked in small groups and talked about six different stories where we had to decide if they were fair or unfair. We then had to think about what 'fair' looked like in colours, patterns and pictures.

NEWS TIME

We have had a busy time in 2BP this week. There were 10 words on our Word Wall that we needed to learn how to spell and read. We also played a cool game called "Don't Break the Ice" where you had to remember how to spell all the words on our Word Wall Word - WOW!

This week we also had some fun together during Unit Work. We didn't actually do any writing or reading about our You, Me, Us Unit but instead we just played some games together and had some FUN!!!

News Time was great again this week and Group 3 students had their chance to bring something from home and talk about it with the class. You can see from the photographs above that the things students had were fabulous.

We also started Mathletics as part of our Maths Groups. We are starting to get to know our Passwords and Usernames and how best to work through the activites and games on the site.

This week you were spectacular in counting to thirty. Our fun activity involved making an echidna with thirty spikes. From this activity we discovered there were a number of ways to show this number.

Benny and Fairy Bread

This week in 2BP we had a visit from Benny the dog during News Time. Benny belongs to Bianca and is 45 years old in dog years! WOW and he didn't look that old! To finish off Maths this week we practised halves and quarters by making Fairy Bread. We had to cut our bread slice into halves and then into quarters. Of course to finish off we had to eat it! The last Mystery item from our Display Table was a candle snuff. It was used to put out candles in the old days. Thanks for participating in our Mystery item quizz during the term. We hope that you learnt something along the way about the way we were.

The Stroogle

This week, Author and Illustrator Dr Cameron visited SJV to run workshops with students. 2BP built a submarine by cutting and pasting different shapes and learnt a little about being an author and illustrator. Dr Cameron also introduced us to his exciting range of books including books about creating cool characters and Pie Rats!

This is our last week for our Mystery item quiz. The Mystery item from last week was a washing dolly. This wooden tool was used to mix the clothes around in the washing tub - very hard work. This weeks item has something to do with light. Good luck and leave a comment with you answer.

The Way We Were

Our excursion to Colonial Living History at the Tingalpa Pioneer Chapel and Cemetery on Friday was fantastic. At the gate we had to step back in time to 1836. We met three people who had only recently settled in Brisbane and we helped with the daily chores of making damper, erecting a tent and washing and drying clothes. We all enjoyed the damper we had made for morning tea and we learnt a lot about the early settlers in Queensland. The Chapel, built in 1836, was where we started and finished our journey back in time.

Bread and Butter

This week in 2BP we talked about the food that would have been eaten in the "olden days". We looked at the daily menu of a child in the 1900's and compared the food with what we eat today. We all decided that we much rather eat the food we have today! As part of our learning on food from the past we baked bread and made butter in our classroom. It was fantastic to come into our classroom and smell fresh baked bread and it tasted really good. We topped the bread with the butter we made using fresh cream and a marble mixed in a container by shaking and golden syrup.

The mystery item from last week was a button hook used on a ladies shoe. In the past shoes had a lot of tiny buttons on them which were too small for fingers to do up and undo. This weeks mystery item is from the farm and was used on an animal. Good luck with you answers - don't forget to post your comment.

This week in 2BP we learnt about half-past times and played a great game that Mrs S had made called Time Bingo. You had to cross off the half-past times on your card as they were called by the Time Keeper . This week we also participated in the national Count Me In activity where the whole school sang about music being everything. We sounded so good!

Stand Up For Poverty

Today in 2BP we are all dressed in white to show our support to end POVERTY! Our school registered on the Stand Up and Take Action site and today we will all meet on the playground to repeat the pledge to end poverty now.

This week in class we also continued our work on The Way We Were. We learnt the parts of a friendly letter so that we can start to think about writing a letter back to Mary L from 1948 telling her what school is like for us now. The two mystery items from our display table have been aprons and a record - well done to those of you who guessed right. Ask Mum or Dad how these items were used. The Way We Were

This week in 2BP we started a new Unit of work for Term 4. This term we are looking back at our history and The Way We Were! We have investigated what travel would have been like in the 1800's using the Cobb & Co Coach Company and we have received a letter from Mary L who went to our school in 1948. A Visit from Ted and the Rainbow Fish

This is our last week for Term 3 and we are all looking forward to the holidays. Jordan bought his dog, Ted to visit in News Time on Wednesday. Ted is a Highland Terrier and is four years old. He has just had a hair cut and he was very well behaved when he let the children pat him.

This week we finished our Friends Program where we have been learning about friendship skills. The class listened to the story about the Rainbow Fish and we made brightly decorated scales. We were only allowed to keep one scale and we had to share our other scales with classmates. There was such great sharing in our classroom!

Plant Experiment and Fathers Day

This week in 2BP we started a Science Experiment. Working in small groups we planted some Mung Bean seeds on a bed of cotton wool and placed them around the classroom. Each group chose one variable to change - either the amount of water, food or sunlight. All other variables were kept the same and this makes it a 'fair test'. We have predicted what we think each of the containers will look like in 14 days time and we start collecting data on Monday. We can't wait to see what happens!!!

2BP would like to wish all Dad's a very Happy Fathers Day on Sunday. We hope you like the card and bookmark we made in class.

Book Week and our Litter Tree

This week was Book Week and we celebrated with a Book Parade. The theme this year was to come as your favourite book character or a "jungle safari". 2BP had a great time dressing up and introducing our book characters to the school. We even had a visit from Tashi and Jack!

As part of our "Love My Planet" Unit work we built a litter tree. We counted all the rubbish that we had put in the bin during the day and for every piece we put one leave onto our Litter Tree. WOW!!! Look at all our leaves on our tree. Imagine if all that rubbish had been left on the ground or on the floor in our classroom - what a mess it would be.

Miss Lily and Streets Ahead

This week in 2BP we read a story about Miss Lily and her Fabulous Pink Feather Boa. The feather boa is the most wonderful thing the Last Potoroo (a small mammal found in different parts of Australia) has ever seen. The Last Potoroo takes a little of the feather boa as she feels for the first time in her life that she can do anything and everything when she is wearing it! At the end of the story the Last Potoroo say's SORRY and is forgiven by Miss Lily. After reading this story we decided that there are four steps in RECONCILING when you do something wrong. 1. Admit the wrong 2. Say "sorry" 3. Make up 4. Ask to be forgiven.

This week our class learnt some great road safety lessons from Thud who lives at RACQ. Thud told us that before we cross the road we should always STOP LOOK LISTEN and THINK!

Grafitti Wall

This week in 2BP we looked at the problem - What can we do about Climate Change? The class thought back to their GAS! excursion and what we had learnt to help us discover some of the answers. We then came up with our own ideas on what we could do about Climate Change and we put them all down on a big piece of butchers paper - our Grafitti Wall! Everyone had two or three great ideas that would help care for the planet.

2BP WIN THE WWW TROPHY

This week 2BP won the Walking, Wheelie, Wednesday Trophy because the whole class travelled by bus on Wednesday - it was to and from our GAS! excursion. We were so proud to receive the trophy and it has been displayed at the front of our classroom all week. What class will win next week we wonder?

The Art Show was a great success last Friday. One of our class Mum's won our Boat sculpture during the art auction. She has happily donated the boat back to the school and it will hang in the library overlooking the Bay - exactly where a boat should be!

GAS!

Last week 2BP went on an excursion to see GAS! at the Pullenvale Environmental Education Centre. We finally got to see and meet Billie and Jeanie. While we watched the show we learnt all about the bad gases - carbon dioxide and methane, and how trees are like a pair of giant lungs that clean the air of the bad gases and make oxygen for us to breath. After the show we participated in a number of workshops. First we visited the GAS! show backstage and Ailish tried on the Mike the Car Salesman suit! Meryl, who played the character of Billie played some Drama games with the class and we all had a turn at "Kids Go Green" on stage. We then tried some Tree Watching with Ron and shared some observations of what we had seen. Next was a visit to Lucinda, who played the character of Jeanie where we also met Daniel and learnt a little more about photosynthesis, fossil fuels and how important trees are for the environment. All in all it was a fantastic excursion! We had a great day.

Grandparent's Day and Art Show!

2BP had an exciting week with Grandparent's Day on Thursday here at school. There were "wonderful Grandparent's" everywhere enjoying classroom visits, a liturgy in the Church and a fantastic morning tea.

This week we have also been busy making a boat sculpture for our school Art Show. Everyone has been having a go at weaving with different coloured fabric and the boat is really starting to take shape.

Drums and GAS!

Welcome back 2BP for Term 3. When we arrived back after our holidays we discovered that our Unit work this term is 'Love My Planet'. There have been a number of clues left in our classroom this week about 'GAS!' and we think this has something to do with our excursion to Pullenvale Environmental Education Centre in a couple of weeks time. We have met Billie Baker-Smith and her Mum, listened to the GAS! song and learnt a little about climate change and how we can look after our Planet. We are keeping our eyes peeled for more clues next week!

Our first week back at school ended with a visit from an African Drumming group. WOW! were they fantastic. Everybody got to have a go at drumming and singing and our teachers even danced!

The Holidays Are Here!

After a very, very busy Term 2 we started to celebrate the winter holidays which start tomorrow. 2BP started the day with a wonderful Sacred Time and some lovely prayers for a safe holiday. Mrs B made us a 'Winter Fun Booklet' with lots of fun pages in it to complete, we watched a movie - 'The BFG', ate some popcorn and cleaned out our desks. We are now ready for a relaxing holiday!

Mining for Minerals and Paper Person

This week 2BP went 'mining for minerals' in a choc chip cookie. It's amazing how many choc chips you will find in one chocolate chip cookie! We used a very special digging tool to help separate the choc chip minerals from the cookie - a tooth pick!

Students completed a Paper Person in Religion. This paper person was used to illustrate how the attributes of the Holy Spirit are present in someone. Things like love, patience, peace and joy were illustrated on the paper person using words and drawings.

Volcanoes and Trees!

This week in 2BP we made a volcano that erupted lava. First of all we worked in pairs to build a volcano in the sandpit. We then put a plastic cup of bicarb soda on the top of the volcano and added some red coloured vinegar. The volcano ERUPTED red lava!!! In nature this lava would harden and become igneous rock.

Today we celebrated National Tree Planting Day. We worked in small groups to dig a small hole, plant the tree and water it well. Our class trees were planted outside of the Principal's Office at our school and we will continue to care for them so they grow big and strong.

Making Rocks!

This week 2BP made a Sedimentary rock using sand, water and epsom salts. We had to do lots of stirring, dissolving and pouring and our rocks are now baking on the window sill in our classroom. It will take a few weeks for the water to evaporate from the solution and our Sedimentary rock will be ready!

Crossing the Red Sea and Sorting Rocks

This week we followed the story of Moses as he lead God's people out of Egypt to find a land of their own. We heard how the people crossed the Red Sea safely after the waters were separted into two parts. 2BP played a board game called "Crossing the Red Sea". If you were travelling well at night because of the light God had given you took an extra turn. But if the Pharaoh's chariots came too close you had to miss a turn.

We also learnt how to sort a large group of things into smaller groups this week. 2BP practiced with coloured straws, rice crackers, popcorn and finally rocks from our class Rock Collection. We discovered that rocks can be sorted by colour, shape, size, weight, surface, hardness and type.

In 2BP this week we learnt how to cut Fairy Bread into quarters. Of course we had to eat it when we finished - a quater at a time until the whole piece of bread was gone! Did you know that two quarters is the same as one half and four quarters is the same as one whole?

We also profiled the rocks in our class Rock Collection. We used magnifying glasses to look carefully at the rocks and then using a Rocks and Minerals chart we profiled our rocks by look, feel and type. What great scientific work 2BP!

And to finish the busy week off we had a parent visit the classroom who is also a Miner. He bought in some special mining equipment including a hard hat/light and a safety vest. We learnt about the type of rocks mined at the mines in Mt Isa and how hard it can be to find rocks with copper and lead in them.

Measuring MASS

This week in 2BP we investigated the MASS of different objects in our classroom. We had to use a Pan Balance and compare how much they weighed against flat and long maths blocks. Did you know that Mrs B's pencil case weighed as much as 5 flat blocks and 5 long blocks! WOW!!! And we also discovered that a table and the Earth would be heavier than us!
